Karla Pretorius: “Sometimes showing up again is the real victory”

For years, Karla Pretorius has been known as one of the fiercest defenders in world netball - a player who reads the game with precision and leads with calm authority.

But beyond the medals, titles, and international success, Pretorius says her proudest achievement may simply be finding the strength to start over after one of the hardest seasons of her life.

The Free State Crinums captain recently opened up about stepping away from the game in 2025, navigating personal heartbreak, and fighting her way back mentally and physically to compete again at the highest level.

“I had to fight my way back, physically and emotionally,” she says. “November 2025 was one of the lowest points I’ve ever faced. I was at my most unfit, and mentally in a deep hole.”

Despite the challenges, Pretorius refused to let that period define her story.

“This chapter of my journey will not be defined by the outcome. It will be defined by the courage to start again,” she says.

Pretorius’ netball journey began in little league alongside her sister, Tanya von Berg, before growing into a career that saw her represent the SPAR Proteas and play professionally in both the United Kingdom and Australia.

Now back leading the Crinums, Pretorius says she plays with a new sense of gratitude and freedom after achieving many of the goals she once dreamed about as a young player.

“There’s nothing to lose, only an opportunity to give everything I have every single time,” she says.

Away from playing, the former international has also stepped into coaching as director of netball at Hoërskool Fichardtpark. She believes coaching has changed the way she sees the game.

“I’m not just playing anymore, I’m understanding, teaching, and living it in a completely different way,” she explains.

Pretorius helped the Crinums win three consecutive Telkom Netball League titles before continuing her career overseas. After returning in 2024, she once again helped guide the team to championship success.

As captain, she says her focus is always on creating an environment where her teammates can thrive.
