Sasol Banyana Banyana coach names squad for Japan friendlies

Desiree Ellis has announced her final Sasol Banyana Banyana squad for the upcoming international friendlies against Japan Women's National Football Team, set to take place from 31 May to 10 June 2026.

The squad features a strong mix of experienced campaigners, established internationals and exciting local talent as South Africa continues preparations on the international stage. Ellis has largely kept faith in a core group of players who have consistently featured for the national team, while also rewarding standout performers from the domestic league.

In goal, the coach selected Andile Dlamini, Kaylin Swart and Katlego Moletsane to provide depth and experience between the posts. The defensive unit includes reliable names such as Bambanani Mbane, Karabo Dhlamini, Asanda Hadebe and Khutso Pila, alongside University of the Western Cape defenders Sinegugu Zondi, Fikile Magama, Antonia Maponya and Lonathemba Mhlongo.

The midfield department will once again be led by captain Linda Motlhalo, with support from Bongeka Gamede, Refiloe Jane, Noxolo Cesane, Isabella Ludwig and Nonhlanhla Mthandi. The squad also highlights the growing influence of South African players abroad, with Motlhalo based in Scotland and Gamede playing in Denmark.

Up front, Ellis has named a dangerous attacking line-up featuring Nthabiseng Majiya, Wendy Shongwe, Gabriela Moodaly-Salgado, Bonolo Mokoma and Thorisho Mphelo. The inclusion of Thembi Kgatlana, who plays her club football in Mexico, adds further firepower and international experience to the squad.

One of the notable aspects of the squad is the continued balance between players from dominant domestic clubs such as Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and JVW FC, as well as emerging talent from university football structures.

The upcoming friendlies against Japan are expected to provide a tough but valuable test for Banyana Banyana as Ellis continues building combinations and assessing her squad ahead of future international competitions.
