Springbok Women lay down World Cup marker with impressive victory over USA

The Springbok Women delivered one of their most complete performances of the season as they defeated the USA Women 34-21 at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday, extending their impressive run of form ahead of their upcoming international commitments.

A dominant first-half display proved decisive for South Africa, who raced into a commanding 29-0 lead at the break after producing a clinical attacking performance and shutting down every threat posed by the visitors.

The hosts wasted little time stamping their authority on the contest. Winger Ayanda Malinga crossed for the opening try after a powerful break from Vainah Ubisi, with Jakkie Cilliers adding the conversion to give the Springbok Women the perfect start.

South Africa continued to pile on the pressure, controlling territory and possession as Unam Tose powered over for the second try before Babalwa Latsha joined the scoresheet following another patient attacking sequence.

The Eagles struggled to cope with the physicality and intensity of the Bok Women, and Logan Welman capitalised with two well-taken tries before half-time to leave the home side firmly in control.

The Springboks picked up where they left off after the restart as the outstanding Ubisi was rewarded with a try following sustained pressure, stretching the lead to 34-0 and seemingly putting the result beyond doubt.

To their credit, the USA refused to surrender. The visitors gradually found their rhythm in the second half and finally broke through South Africa’s defence when Freda Tafuna scored their first try, converted by Annabella Vogel.

The momentum briefly shifted in the visitors’ favour as Tessa Hann sparked another attacking move that resulted in Ashley Cowdrey touching down, before Elizabeth Cook added a late try to reduce the deficit.

Despite the late resurgence, South Africa’s dominant opening 40 minutes had already done the damage. The Springbok Women remained composed to close out a deserved 34-21 victory, underlining the progress made under head coach Swys de Bruin.

The result will provide another significant confidence boost for the Springbok Women as they continue building momentum, with their attacking cohesion, defensive resilience and growing depth offering plenty of encouragement ahead of the challenges that lie ahead.
