The defending African champions knew only a win would keep their hopes alive, and they delivered when it mattered most. Thembi Kgatlana found the breakthrough in the first half before South Africa produced a disciplined defensive performance to deny Burkina Faso an equaliser despite sustained late pressure.
South Africa finished second in Group B with four points, while Ivory Coast topped the standings after defeating Tanzania 2-1. The result sends Banyana Banyana into a quarter-final showdown with tournament hosts Morocco on Saturday, with a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup also on the line.
Head coach Dr Desiree Ellis praised her team’s ability to dig deep after taking an early lead.
“We made it difficult for ourselves after scoring because we stopped playing. It wasn’t our prettiest performance, but the players stayed organised defensively and showed great determination. Sometimes winning is more important than how you win,” Ellis said.
Ellis made two changes to the side that drew with Ivory Coast, handing starts to Isabella Ludwig and Hildah Magaia in place of Bongeka Gamede and Nthabiseng Majiya.
The victory completed a remarkable recovery for Banyana Banyana, who bounced back after opening their campaign with a defeat to Tanzania before earning a point against Ivory Coast. Their response under pressure ensured the reigning champions remained in contention for both continental success and World Cup qualification.
Ellis believes the team’s resilience has been one of its biggest strengths.
“This team has shown character throughout the tournament. We’ve learned over the years that success isn’t only about playing attractive football. There are moments when you have to battle, stay focused and find a way to win. That’s exactly what the players did.”
It was also a memorable evening for several members of the squad. Captain Refiloe Jane celebrated her birthday, while Hildah Magaia and Gabriela Moodaly-Salgado both reached the milestone of 50 international appearances. Kgatlana’s match-winning display earned her the Player of the Match award.
