Understanding netball: positions, rules, and FAQs

Netball is a fast-paced, exciting sport that requires teamwork, strategy, and skill. If you’re new to the game, here’s a simple guide to help you understand how it all works.

How Many Players Are in a Team?

A netball team is made up of seven players on court at a time. Each player has a specific position and area they can move in, which helps maintain structure and flow during the game.

The 7 Netball positions and their roles:

  1. Goal Shooter (GS) – Responsible for scoring goals within the shooting circle.
  2. Goal Attack (GA) – Assists in shooting and helps move the ball into the goal third.
  3. Wing Attack (WA) – Feeds the ball to shooters and creates attacking opportunities. She works closely with centre in feeding the ball to shooters.
  4. Centre (C) – Controls the pace of the game, linking defence and attack.
  5. Wing Defence (WD) – Marks the opposing WA and prevents attacking plays.
  6. Goal Defence (GD) – Defends against the GA and helps protect the goal circle.
  7. Goal Keeper (GK) – Guards the goal circle and prevents the GS from scoring.

Basic rules for beginners:

  • Players can hold the ball for a maximum of three seconds.
  • You cannot run or dribble with the ball – it must be passed.
  • Each position has designated areas they can move within.
  • Contact or obstruction of an opponent is not allowed.
  • A game is usually played in four quarters of 15 minutes each.
