Spar Proteas crowned SPAR Challenge Champions after commanding series win over England

The SPAR Proteas were crowned champions of the SPAR Challenge Test Series after delivering a commanding 65–50 victory over England in the final Test at Ellis Park Arena on Sunday, sealing a memorable series triumph on home soil.

Backed by a passionate Johannesburg crowd, the South African netball team claimed the series 2–1, having won the opening and closing Tests of the three-match contest. Sunday’s performance was a statement of intent from the hosts, who bounced back in emphatic fashion after Saturday’s defeat to close out the series in style.

The Proteas set the tone early in the decider, showcasing intensity, accuracy and relentless pressure across the court. Their ability to dominate key moments and capitalise on turnovers proved decisive as they pulled away from England to secure a convincing 15-goal win.

Head coach Jenny van Dyk was full of praise for her side, applauding the clinical manner in which the players executed the game plan.

“The team responded so well to the plan and to what we knew we had to get done out there today,” said Van Dyk. “I’m very proud of the players and the team for the way they handled the occasion.”

Captain Khanyisa Chawane echoed her coach’s sentiments, crediting the team’s hunger and resilience, particularly after what she described as some “hard conversations” following Saturday’s loss.

“It was amazing. I think I just liked the hunger,” said Chawane. “You could see each and every person on that court wanted to win. We went for every ball, and even when it was thrown in another direction, we changed our bodies to get there. Every loose ball, we were on it.”

She added that the team’s energy and commitment were key to building momentum and driving them toward victory. “From that effort, you could tell everyone wanted to take this, and from there we just built all the way to the win.”

Despite the disappointment, England head coach Jess Thirlby acknowledged that her side had been outplayed on the day, while still taking positives from the series as they look ahead to the Commonwealth Games later this year.

“First, I want to congratulate South Africa on a brilliant performance in front of their home crowd,” said Thirlby. “We didn’t give up, and I’m proud of our efforts, but ultimately we were beaten in too many areas. It hurts, but credit must go to the Proteas for the standard they produced today.”
