Nonkululeko Mlaba: The Incredible Rise from Township Fields to Cricket History

From the dusty fields of KwaMashu to the grand stages of international cricket, Nonkululeko “Lefty” Mlaba is redefining South African women’s sport.

At just 25, she made history as the first South African woman to take a 10-wicket haul in a Test match, leaving England reeling and the cricket world stunned. Mlaba’s rise is not just about records, it’s about grit, talent, and a journey that proves dreams can thrive against all odds.

Born on June 27, 2000, in Durban, Mlaba grew up in KwaMashu with limited access to professional cricket facilities. Yet from a young age, she showed a rare combination of skill and determination. Cricket became more than a game it was a path to a bigger world and a way to prove that where you come from doesn’t define where you can go.

Mlaba’s international career began at 19 with her T20I debut in 2019, followed by her ODI debut in 2021 and her Test debut in 2022. Known for her slow left-arm orthodox spin, she quickly became a key figure in South Africa’s bowling attack. Her precision, tactical variations, and ability to apply pressure have consistently troubled top batters across formats, earning her back-to-back nominations for ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year.

Her breakthrough came in December 2024 when she took a 10-wicket haul against England, finishing with match figures of 10 for 157. The performance not only broke records but showcased her tactical brilliance and composure under pressure. She followed this with strong performances in T20 and ODI formats, solidifying her status as one of the Proteas’ most reliable match-winners. At the 2025 Cricket South Africa Awards, she swept four major categories, including Women’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year.

Off the field, Mlaba remains grounded and intensely private. While her estimated net worth reflects earnings from contracts, match fees, and domestic leagues, she prioritizes performance over publicity. Even challenges, like a minor ICC reprimand during the 2025 Women’s World Cup, have done little to derail her focus.

What makes Mlaba truly remarkable is her role as a symbol of inspiration. Young girls across South Africa, especially those from underprivileged communities, see themselves in her journey – from township fields to global arenas. Her story underscores that dedication, resilience, and hard work can overcome obstacles and create opportunities.

As South African women’s cricket continues to grow,  Mlaba stands at the forefront. Every delivery she bowls, every record she breaks, cements her place as a game-changer. More than just a rising star, Mlaba is proof that greatness often emerges from the most unlikely places, and her story is only just beginning.
