Ime Okon Unveils Ambitions After Signing with Hannover 96

Promising South African centre-back Ime Okon has officially joined German side Hannover 96, marking a significant step in his career after receiving interest from several clubs - including top teams in the Premier Soccer League.

The 21-year-old defender, formerly of SuperSport United, becomes the 13th signing for the Bundesliga 2 outfit ahead of the 2025/26 season. Okon has penned a four-year deal with Hannover, choosing the European challenge over local offers, including reported interest from Kaizer Chiefs.

Fresh off representing Bafana Bafana at the 2025 Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup, Okon is embracing this new chapter with confidence and ambition.

“I’m delighted to be signing with Hannover 96. I’m very excited about this challenge of playing in Germany,” said Okon in his first interview with the club.

“I’m looking forward to improving as a player and growing as a person. I would describe myself as a fast, robust defender, and I’m ready to bring those qualities to the team.”

Hannover 96 Managing Director Marcus Mann expressed his enthusiasm about Okon’s arrival, highlighting the club’s long-term interest in the young defender.

“Ime is a player with exciting potential and strong physical attributes,” said Mann. “Our coaching team, including Christian Titz and André Kilian, has been tracking his progress for some time.

We gathered in-depth data and were impressed by his athletic profile. While we know he’ll need time to adapt, his eagerness to learn gives us confidence that he’ll develop very well.”

Okon is expected to begin training with his new teammates this week as he settles into life in Germany.
