Arsenal complete signing of Spain midfielder Martín Zubimendi

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Spanish international Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, securing the highly rated midfielder in a deal worth 60 million pounds.

The 26-year-old becomes the latest addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad as the Gunners continue strengthening ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Zubimendi joins Arsenal after a standout season in LaLiga and a strong showing with Spain at Euro 2024. Widely regarded as one of the most consistent holding midfielders in Europe, his calmness under pressure, tactical awareness, and precise distribution have drawn comparisons to Sergio Busquets.

A product of the Real Sociedad academy, Zubimendi made over 170 senior appearances for the club, playing a pivotal role under manager Imanol Alguacil and helping establish Sociedad as a regular contender in Spain’s top flight.

Interest in Zubimendi had been growing steadily across Europe, with both Real Madrid and Liverpool attempting to sign him. Real Madrid made a late push following the appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager, while Liverpool had identified him as their top target in defensive midfield for the 2024 window. However, Arsenal had long been ahead of the pack, having reached an agreement with the player as early as March, according to sources. Zubimendi previously turned down offers to stay in San Sebastián for another season, a decision he described as important for his development.

His profile rose even further during Euro 2024, where he stepped up in the final to replace the injured Rodri at halftime. In one of the tournament’s most high-pressure moments, Zubimendi delivered a calm and composed performance to help Spain secure a 2–1 victory over England and lift the trophy. His big-match temperament and technical quality made him a sought-after target across the continent. Manchester City also explored the possibility of signing him earlier in the year as cover for Rodri during a long-term injury, but Arsenal’s clear project, long-term planning, and Arteta’s personal involvement were decisive factors in completing the move.

At Arsenal, Zubimendi will reunite with his former Real Sociedad teammate Mikel Merino, who joined the club last season. His arrival is expected to add both depth and quality to the Gunners’ midfield, as Arteta looks to build a squad capable of challenging for major honours in both the Premier League and Champions League.
