Head coach Desiree Ellis has emphasised the importance of the upcoming fixtures, revealing that four scheduled friendlies -two against Algeria and two against Japan -come at a crucial stage in the team’s build-up.
“Now we get to play two friendlies against Algeria and two against Japan. It gives us an opportunity to also have a look at the players in the league,” said Ellis, highlighting the need to build match fitness with the domestic season yet to get underway.
With several players returning from injury and others settling into new clubs, squad assessment remains a top priority. Ellis underlined the importance of identifying the strongest possible group ahead of upcoming international commitments. “We want to select the best squad available to give us that opportunity to first qualify for the World Cup again,” she added.

Historically, Banyana and Algeria have met four times across all competitions. South Africa have won twice, Algeria once, with one match ending in a draw – setting the stage for another competitive encounter.
Ellis is expecting a tough challenge from the North African side. “They’re very good on the ball, very organised, very difficult to break down and it will challenge us in different areas,” she said. Algeria’s European-based players and recent WAFCON experience further underline their strength as opposition.
While results remain important, Ellis reiterated the need for careful player management. “Yes, we want to win the games, but it’s also an opportunity to have a look at players. We have to manage the minutes and the legs as well.”
The clash is expected to provide a valuable test of Banyana Banyana’s tactical discipline and attacking efficiency – two areas identified as key focus points as they continue their road to WAFCON 202
