Netball South Africa announces travelling squad to face Silver Ferns in three-day test series

Netball South Africa has announced the SPAR Proteas squad who will be travelling to New Zealand for a three-day international series against the Silver Ferns.

The series will be played between 21 and 28 September. This series is part of their preparations for the Commonwealth Games next year in Glasgow and the Sydney Netball World Cup in 2027.

The squad, which will be led by captain Khanyisa Chawane, includes new young talent such as Nozipho Ntshangase, Juanita van Tonder and Entle Futshane.
Ntshangase, who plays for Kingdom Stars in KwaZulu-Natal, Futshane, who plays for Southern Stings, and van Tonder, who plays for Eastern Cape Aloes in the Telkom Netball League, will be representing the country for the first time.

Other players include Owethu Ngubane, Kamogelo Maseko, Tarle Mathe, Refiloe Nketsa, Nicholé Breedt, Nicola Smith, Rolene Streutker, Elmeré van der Berg, Shadine van der Merwe, Jamie van Wyk and Sanmarie Visser.

Over the past ten years, the SPAR Proteas and the Silver Ferns have faced each other 37 times, with the SPAR Proteas winning only one match. The highest score the SPAR Proteas achieved against New Zealand was 60 points in 2019, when they lost 62–60. The average score in matches between the two teams is 66–38 in favour of the Silver Ferns.

In 1995, South Africa managed to defeat New Zealand 59–57 in Birmingham and subsequently played Australia in the final of the Netball World Cup.

In the most recent encounter between the SPAR Proteas and the Silver Ferns at the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa, the teams drew 48–48.
