Mokwena, who previously coached Mamelodi Sundowns, steps into the role after leading Wydad AC to a third-place finish in the 2024/25 Botola Pro 1 in Morocco. Known for his structured approach and eye for detail, the South African tactician is already laying the groundwork for success in Algeria.
The 37-year-old is not making the move alone – he is bringing key members of his backroom staff with him. Joining him at MC Alger are assistant coach Enzo Donis, goalkeeper coach Wendell Robinson, and fitness and conditioning coach Sibusiso Mahlangu.
Mokwena had initially assembled a full technical team at Wydad AC, which included Alan Freese, Sinethemba Badela, Sibusiso Mahlangu, and Sibusiso Makitla.

Speaking to Metro FM, Mokwena explained his vision:
“The club [MC Alger] wants to keep some of its current technical staff, which is great because they already understand the players, the environment, and have experience in the CAF Champions League. That familiarity is important.”
He emphasized the importance of building strong relationships within the new setup:
“That’s why I’m bringing in coach Wendell, who speaks the goalkeeping language. If we keep the current goalkeeper coach, they can work closely and build a solid connection.”
Mokwena also praised his new assistant, Donis, who brings international experience:
“He’s worked at AS Vita and recently with the Togo national team. He’s from Belgium and has agreed to leave his post because he believes in this project. He also adds value as a set-piece specialist, which gives us a well-rounded technical unit.”

With MC Alger returning to the CAF Champions League, Mokwena will be looking to blend expertise, familiarity, and innovation as he prepares to take on continental challenges with the reigning Algerian Ligue 1 champions.
