Xabi Alonso Begins Real Madrid Overhaul with Shock Transfer List

Newly appointed Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is making early waves at the Bernabeu, with reports suggesting that David Alaba, Fran Garcia, and Aurelien Tchouameni could all be on their way out as part of a major squad overhaul ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Spanish publication Fichajes reports that Alonso has already identified several high-profile players who don’t fit into his long-term vision for the club. The move has sparked intense discussion among fans, especially given the stature and contributions of the names involved. However, Alonso’s desire to bring the same high-intensity, pressing style that saw him thrive at Bayer Leverkusen means difficult decisions are being made.

Among those reportedly set to depart is 32-year-old Austrian international David Alaba. Although a respected leader within the squad, his ongoing injury troubles have significantly hampered his ability to contribute. A source familiar with the situation stated, “His leadership is undeniable, but Alonso cannot afford to rely on a player whose fitness is uncertain.”

Another player likely to be moved on is left-back Fran Garcia. At 25, Garcia returned to Madrid with high expectations, but has struggled to make a meaningful impact. According to Fichajes, Alonso believes Garcia “lacks the consistency and tactical alignment required for his system.”

Perhaps the most surprising name on the potential exit list is Aurelien Tchouameni. Once considered a future cornerstone of Madrid’s midfield, the 24-year-old Frenchman endured an inconsistent campaign last season. “Tchouameni hasn’t delivered the dominance expected in Madrid’s midfield,” noted one Spanish football pundit. Interest from Liverpool remains strong, and a move could open the door for Alonso to seek a more suitable midfield option.

Despite the decisive nature of Alonso’s plans, not all of his requests have been granted. With Luka Modric set to leave following the Club World Cup, Alonso reportedly asked for a creative midfielder to fill the gap. However, according to Marca, club officials denied the request, responding, “What you have is enough.”

The board believes that with Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga, Jude Bellingham, and Dani Ceballos already available, the midfield remains well-stocked-unless Tchouameni departs, which could change the dynamic.

Names like Martin Zubimendi and Angelo Stiller have been linked, with Alonso reportedly a keen admirer of Zubimendi. However, Real Madrid appear content with their current midfield setup and no official moves have been made for reinforcements.

Alonso’s early actions mark a decisive break from the past, indicating that merit and tactical fit now outweigh sentiment and legacy. As the team gears up for the Club World Cup and the start of the new La Liga season, all eyes will be on how Alonso’s bold strategy unfolds in Madrid’s evolving era.
